Today, I am going to talk about a very interesting and may be somewhat controversial topic. That’s actually a surprisingly common question in some specific countries. Is meditation where God talks to you? Even if you don’t believe in God, stick with me here because I don’t either but I am going to make this blog post as rational and as unbiased as possible. Let’s just have an open mind and treat this as one point of view that may inspire you to come up with your own point of view.
For the Logical People, God Can Mean Different Things
To explore whether meditation is where god talks to you. Let’s first talk about what God really means to different people. For most people, God simply means the one that creates human and the entire world. For some people, they take things a little further in a more logical and technical way by thinking that there can be a group of people that is very advanced technology to create the world and human. There is a third group of people that believe the world and existence of all species are simply created by randomness. To make things clear, let me recap the three types of people that have a different take on what God is. The first group: people that believe the existence of God, someone who is described in different religions who created the entire world . The second group: people who believe there are people that have very advantaged technology and they simply create the world with their super advanced technology. The third group: people who don’t believe that there is a creator of the world and the world is simply a product of randomness.
Talking to the Gods that are Described in Religions
One of the most famous buddhist leaders today, Dalai Lama, said in his book Beyond Religion that meditation has a very similar effect to the brain as prayer. To put it more simply, prayer can be viewed as a form of meditation. As you may know, meditation is a very good method of making your mind feel calm and relaxed. The big idea behind meditation is that you are trying assign a simple task to your brain to work on so it doesn’t have to work randomly and intensely thinking of something else. The idea is very logical and there is science to back it. If there are people that thinks meditation is a way to connect to God, it is actually a misunderstanding. That is actually a feeling that can make you feel that you can connected to the world simply due to the result of the chemistry and electricity going on in the brain when you meditate. In other words, the feeling of connecting to something at a higher level is simply a by-product of making yourself quiet and calm. I can almost be certain that God doesn’t talk to you thru meditation even if it exists, regardless of what religion you belong to.
Talking to the Gods, Who are People with Super Advanced Technology
Now, the more interesting discussion happens if we think the world is a matrix. For some people, usually the logical type, they think that the world is created by people, who may live on another planet or live in the future, that used their super advanced technology to create the world and all the specifics. In a view, we can think of ourselves as super complex computers. In a more interesting view, our life are just games that we, as some super computers, have to play. In that case, meditation is a tool that is pre-programmed into this world that we have discovered. Since it is a pre-programmed tool, only the creator of this matrix or program can confirm whether it is a tool that allows us to communicate with the creators. To make things even more interesting, can we be super computers that have machine learning capability. In other words, meditation is a tool that wasn’t pre-programmed but is created through our machine learning capability. Who knows what the tool can do.
I Believe that The World is a Product of Randomness
As famous author explained in his great book “Fool by Randomness”, we just seem to have a very bad understanding of how powerful randomness is and what many things in life are caused by randomness. While I believe that Darwin’s evolution theory is not completely true. I believe that most of them are true. People and other species in the world just have undergone the procedure of “evolve or die” for many thousands of years. Randomness make human look like what we are and make trees look like trees. The most common argument that goes against this is that some people may say: why would there still be apes today and why haven’t them evolve into human already? I think the most obvious and logical answers is that only one group of apes adopted the environment and transformed into human simply by randomness. That’s actually a very similar question of why Myspace doesn’t work out but why Facebook does. There are many reasons to explain that but randomness certainly plays a large part.
No Believe Can Be Proven Right or Wrong Easily
Since “communicating with God” is not an exact science obviously, there is almost no way to prove whether it is possible or whether God exists. Borrowing Taleb’s idea in his book Fooled by Randomness, you can really prove whether all swans are white, but you can prove that not all swans are white by finding one black swan. In other words, even if you can’t find a black swan, you can’t confirm all swans are white. Apply that big idea into out topic today, I can confirm that talking to God thru meditation is impossible unless we have the one person that we can all confirm that has talked to God thru meditation. Until the day that our technology allows us to make randomness a smaller part of our life, let’s just keep the interesting debate open.
