Let me share with you when I started meditation. I started meditation when I was in my thirties years ago. I bet very few people begin to meditate regularly before they reach their mid twenties. Why is that we don’t tend to start meditating earlier in our lives? Is the current trend of meditation going to help? And to go along with these interesting questions, the key question I want to explore today is how meditation can be useful for students.
Why We Don’t Start Meditating at Younger Age
Before we start exploring on whether it is good to start meditating earlier rather than later in our lives, let’s first talk about the interesting subject of why we have the tendency to start meditating in our late twenties or later. I think the way I started meditation is the way a lot of people start and that may be able to explain why we start late. I used to be always in a rush in my twenties. My mind used to jump around a lot and I thought that is called creativity. When I reached my thirties, I began to see that there may be some problems in my life that cause me to struggle consistently. I began to read books and eventually get in touch with the so-called “self improvement” or “self help” genre. The more I read books and watch videos about the topic of self improvement, the more I heard about meditation as one of the secrets to success. With curiosity and my desire to be successful, I was destined to try. And as time goes by, the habit of meditating sticks. In conclusion, my theory of why we start meditation late is that we haven’t encountered enough struggles yet at a young age that make us reflect and think about ways to improve ourselves. As our experience and struggles humble us, we begin to look for solutions to improve ourselves and meditation is one of the tools or solutions that are suggested by a lot of people.
Are Meditation Great for Young People & Students
In the previous paragraph, I have explained why I think young people don’t tend to meditate. But do I think meditation is beneficial to them. I definitely think so. Remember what the main purpose of meditation is. It is to clear our mind. Having a clear mind is beneficial to people of any age, at any stage of their lives. I think even high school students are old enough to have meditation. I would argue that even younger kids can meditate but I actually think that their minds are simple and clear enough relatively to the complexity of their small world. I truly believe that many high school students and college students have too much stress that they don’t deserve. It would be nice for them to learn how to remove or at least reduce those stress by learning how to meditate. I tend to think that these young people would have a very easy time to learn how to meditate as they are usually very good and fast learners.
How is Meditation Useful for Students?
Do you remember what are the main struggles you have when you are a student. I did have a few that I can easily remember. These struggles include academic, friendship and relationship. I am trying to imagine that I was already meditating everyday when I am in college. Would these struggles be reduced?
Meditation, Homework & Exam
School is the place for learning if I say it in a nice way. If I say it is in a more realistic way, it was a place of homework and exam for me. I mean it was still fun yet most of my fun experience are due to people I met in school. Anyway, would meditation help improve my homework and exam results? Yes, I would think so. I think that meditation wouldn’t all of a sudden made me a more brilliant kid. What it would likely do though is to help me relieve stress when the level of stress is high and, therefore, would have made me perform more consistently throughout the years. As I always say, meditation is not something that is magically. It is simply a tool that can help clear your mind. Yet, having a clear mind can be more powerful than you think, especially when what you are try to do has a lot to do with being consistent. Meditation is the tool to make your emotional stay at the center.
Meditation & Friendship
Let’s admit it. No matter whether you are a guy or a gal, you do have a lot of friendship issues in school. Unlike homework and exam which you can still kind of use your hard work to exchange with good results, there isn’t that much that we can do to solve our friendship-related issues. When we grow up, we understand that there are simply people who like you and there are some that hate you. If I meditate when I was in college, I may be able to see things more clearly and understand there are things in friendship that I can control and there are things that I can’t. And I should not be worried about things that I can’t control.
Meditation, Love & Relationship
If there is one thing that make your school life memorable, it must be the guys or girls that you have a crush on or you are in love with. There are a lot of relationship rookies in school and they simply have no ideas on how to handle a lot of the things that handle relationships. In love, you will find envy and jealousy. Yet, by practicing meditation, you can reduce some of those unwanted envy and jealousy. That should be able to improvement the relationship indirectly.
In conclusion, I think that it is beneficial to start meditating regularly earlier. In other words, I think high school students and college students should meditate. That should improve their academic results, their friendship and their love relationship.
